BetProtocol was at Korean Blockchain Week 2019 #KBW2019 for D.Fine in Seoul, South Korea. It was a wonderful time, and we got to meet friends and partners that we had only spoken to electronically. Good to know that real humans are still around, and that we can periodically get together in awesome places like Seoul, and wax poetic about #blockchain and life.

One of the striking features of KBW2019 was how well-organised and well-planned it was. The entire process of ticketing, sign-in, and scheduling were very smooth and professional. There was plenty of spaces to do networking, and the internet in the venue was fast and free. KBW also was kind enough to provide an excellent buffet lunch for all attendees for both days of the conference, which was an unexpected but very appreciated touch.
One of the first keynote speakers was Simon from #Hashed. He gave an excellent opening keynote, in which he explained the importance of decentralised and permissionless blockchain systems, like Ethereum, for the future economy and DeFi. He compared the legacy space that is permissioned, with the DeFi space that is a completely different model. A space where the need for trust is minimised, and strong guarantees for safety (usually enabled by trust) are instead hard coded into self-executing smart contracts. Overall it was an excellent talk, and both accessible to blockchain new-comers and veterans alike.
I actually met Mike Novogratz briefly (he was constantly swarmed by people) and he seemed quite happy to be in Seoul and to attend the conference. His talk was mostly about the macro-economic factors surrounding the crypto-markets, and what may or may not happen in the next Weeks™ to Months™ that could impact the price. Overall he was bullish on crypto, Bitcoin and Ethereum in particular.
This was the first time I got to see Vitalik somewhat up close. He’s definitely taller than I thought. He gave a very interesting talk about the advantages of Ethereum and the vision of the project. He focused on what could be built on Ethereum, and the possibilities of combining different aspects of DeFi and smart contracts to enable novel and interesting use cases, products, and services. In particular, he talked about Ethereum Name Service (ENS), NFTs, and using Ethereum to serve as a registry for things like diplomas and even disaster relief.
We were so happy to meet our good friends at Matic, Sid and Sandeep in person for the first time. We met at a high-tech Internet cafe and started scheming on ways to take over the world. From that conversation we hatched many plans that you’ll see implemented soon.
Matic then invited us to go to DeFi night (one of the many side events that were just as cool and important for business development as the main event) to see their talk. Thanks for the shoutout Sid!
KBW2019 was amazing. Thanks again to all the organisers and attendees at Korean Blockhain Week #KBW2019 for the spectacular event. BetProtocol will be back for sure.
